The Glasgow Overture

Author Anthony Burgess presenting the manuscript of The Glasgow Overture to Lord Provost Michael Kelly, in the Lord Provost's dining room in the City Chambers. The painting on the wall is by Stanley Cursiter and depicts Scottish authors Edwin Muir, James Bridie, Neil Gunn and Eric Linklater. The photograph appeared in the April 1981 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin.

Known to the public almost exclusively as an author of works such as A Clockwork Orange, Burgess was also a talented and prolific composer who wrote over 175 musical works during a compositional career that spanned more than sixty years. He dedicated The Glasgow Overture to the city. The manuscript was passed to Sir Alexander Gibson, musical director of the Scottish National Orchestra. The overture has been performed on numerous occasions at home and abroad.
