Darnley Library

The interior of Darnley Library showing the staff counter and adult lending area, photographed shortly after the library's opening in 1979.

Glasgow District Council made the provision of a library for the large peripheral housing estate of Darnley a priority at the time of local government reorganisation in 1975, but financial restrictions delayed its arrival for four years. The single-storey building eventually opened in a converted shop unit in the local shopping centre.

In the years that followed, extra facilities such as chess and draughts were added. Community events were held in the library, and the Darnley Dinkies under-fives club thrived. Books were provided for users in other local sites such as South Nitshill Community Flat and Darnley Community Centre.

In the 1990s, issues declined in the face of competition from alternative forms of recreation. Cuts in Glasgow City Council's budget for 1997-1998 required library closures and the Darnley branch was closed along with those at Barlanark, Mosspark and Springboig.
