The Horse Shoe

One of Glasgow's best known pubs, the Horse Shoe in Drury Street, photographed in 2004.

Although there had been licensed premises on the site earlier, the Horse Shoe name dates from 1884, when the licence was taken by John Scouller. Scouller's fascination with horses resulted in an equine theme to the remodelled premises, the outstanding feature being the central horseshoe-shaped bar. The bar is 104 feet long and is believed to be the longest pub bar in Britain. The impressive gantry is also greatly admired.

With its wooden furnishings and large engraved mirrors, the Horse Shoe has retained its traditional features and this may be one reason that it is one of the busiest pubs in Glasgow. Other attractions include an attractively-priced bar menu and, upstairs, nightly karaoke. The pop group Travis rehearsed there and some of the group's awards are on display in the bar.
