The Shack Ablaze, 2004

Firefighters from Strathclyde Fire Brigade tackle a serious fire at the Shack nightclub on the morning of 26 November 2004. At the height of the blaze, twelve fire appliances were in attendance with the mobile control centre, and the crews had to withdraw for safety reasons. The fire caused traffic chaos in the morning rush-hour.

Strathclyde Fire Brigade was formed along with Strathclyde Regional Council as part of local government reorganisation of 1975. It incorporated the former Glasgow Fire Service. When a further local government reorganisation took place in 1996, the twelve unitary authorities that replaced Strathclyde Regional Council agreed to retain the service in its existing constitution.

The fire at the Shack severely damaged the former Elgin Place Congregational Church, a category "A" listed building. The shell remained intact but was deemed unsafe, and the building was demolished at the end of December 2004.
