Andrew Buchanan

Andrew Buchanan (1798-1882) was Regius Professor of Theory of Physic (later Physiology) at the University of Glasgow, 1839-1876.

Buchanan became a student at the University at the age of twelve and graduated MD twelve years later. He became Professor of Materia Medica at Anderson's College in 1828, and was a consulting surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary from 1835 until 1862. He was also a founder and editor of the influential Glasgow Medical Journal and threw himself into the professional disputes and internecine squabbling which were features of medical life in the city.

Buchanan was a well-respected surgeon and a ground-breaking biochemist in his prime, but in his latter years he was seen as ineffective and out of touch. His students complained that his lectures had become incomprehensible and he was persuaded to resign.
