A page from Glasgow University Magazine 30 October 1895 featuring a wide range of advertisements aimed at staff and students. It gives some idea of the wide variety of businesses seeking the custom of the university student of the 1890s, including dairies, clothiers, stationers, billiard halls, private tutors and scientific and mathematical instrument makers.

The University provided a significant market for the products and services of many small businesses in Glasgow. To be able to claim to be an official supplier to the University or one of its departments or clubs, as did J F Murdoch and Grant & Watson, was a much sought-after endorsement.
