GUM often carried advertisements from national newspapers, such as the Daily Record or The Times, which saw students as the next generation of readers of their newspapers.

The Daily Record has a distinguished history. In its first incarnation as the crusading and Liberal-leaning North British Daily Mail it was said to be the first daily newspaper published in Scotland. As the Daily Record & Mail it moved to the political right and was said to be the first Scottish newspaper to use photographs. By the 1920s the Daily Record and Mail had adopted an avowedly Unionist stance. During the period of the General Strike in 1926 it was one of six Glasgow newspapers which published several issues of a joint Emergency Press aimed at opposing the strikers' views. However in the late 1950s the paper regained its left-leaning slant, this time in sympathy with the views of the Labour Party.
