Advertisement for John Smith & Son (Glasgow), booksellers, in Glasgow University Magazine 15 February 1933.

John Smith & Son Bookshops, founded in 1751, is Glasgow's oldest bookshop. Smith's sold not just text books but a wide range of products aimed at student needs, including note books and stationery; and scientific and medical instruments, such as stethoscopes and forehead mirrors. As this advertisement points out, they were also manufacturers of electric diagnostic instruments.

The illustration is of an auriscope, a hand-held battery-powered light source and lens system for looking into the outer ear. Most have a detachable tip (speculum) which comes in a range of sizes. The Tympanis Membrane mentioned in the advert is the membrane in the ear which vibrates to sound.
