The Film Society of Glasgow was founded in 1929 with a membership of eighty film buffs and by 1936 had become the largest film society in Great Britain.
The Society was associated with the Glasgow University Film Society, formed in 1931, with the renowned Charles A Oakley as Honorary President. The University has had student film societies, on and off, since the early 20th century. The longest-running was founded in 1948 and continued until the 1990s. The most recent, Film Society @ Glasgow University, existed from November 2000 to April 2002.
