Cartoon

Cartoon in Glasgow University Magazine, 13 May 1936.

The illustrations in GUM often commented on the political situation on a national or international level. This image is darkly prophetic of the horrors which were about to engulf the world in 1939. It was inspired by H G Wells' novel The Shape Of Things To Come, published in 1936. One of the most famous works of science-fiction, it spans the years 1929 to 2105, predicting quickening developments in science and technology, sweeping cultural changes, social upheaval and ever-more destructive wars. Wells wrote the book as a way of articulating his own political convictions, but it also serves as a commentary on the 20th century.
