Advertisement for Annan photographers, in Glasgow University Magazine, 28 October 1969. Thomas Annan set up in business in 1855 as a calotype printer, after having trained under the distinguished Glasgow engraver, Joseph Swan. By 1857 he had founded the firm of photographers, T & R Annan & Sons, with premises in Sauchiehall Street.

The firm photographed many famous people and events in Glasgow's history including David Livingstone; the Glasgow Architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh; the slum areas of the city prior to demolition; and various Glasgow street scenes, tramcars, and buildings. One of Annan's greatest achievements is the collection of prints made of the old closes of Glasgow around the 1860s and 1870s. Published in three editions, Old Closes And Streets Of Glasgow contained over 50 prints, and captured the physical appearance of old Glasgow.

Annan's was the official photographers for the Glasgow Exhibitions of 1888, 1901, and 1911 and was awarded the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria. Many artists exhibited in Annan's Gallery over the years, including L S Lowry in 1946.
