Cinema-going was an established part of Glasgow life in the 1930s, during which time the city had over 130 cinemas, more per head of population than any city outside America. As well as the Paramount, there were also Europe's smallest and largest cinemas: the smallest was the Classic, with seating for just over 100 people, and the largest was Green's Playhouse with 4,400 seats.
Champagne Waltz was a romantic musical comedy in which Paramount Studios hope to make opera diva Gladys Swarthout a movie star. However the film was mauled by the critics and failed to find an audience. The less-than-glamorous name of the female lead can hardly have helped!
