Adam Smith Building

The south facade of the University of Glasgow's Adam Smith Building c 1978.

In 2003 the building houses the Faculty of Social Science, the Departments of Politics, Economics, and Sociology and Anthroplogy, and the Adam Smith Library. It is divided into two parts, one section for staff rooms, the other for laboratories, lecture theatres, and classrooms.

The building is named for Adam Smith (1723-1790), a former student and the Professor of Moral Philosophy there from 1752 to 1764. Known as the Father of Political Economy, he is most famous for his work, An Enquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, published in 1776, which examined the consequences of economic freedom and the functions of the market.
