Queen Margaret Hall of Residence

The University of Glasgow's Queen Margaret Hall of Residence, at Bellshaugh Road in Kelvindale, 1964.

The building was one of two (with Wolfson Hall) constructed in the 1960s to meet the increase in demand for student accommodation. It was designed by architect W N W Ramsay and opened in 1964, with an extension (also by Ramsay) completed in 1967. The building was demolished in 2000 and more modern student accommodation erected on the site.

In 1962 over 90 per cent of the students at the University were from Scotland, with 73 per cent from within 30 miles of Glasgow. Only 4 per cent came from the rest of the UK and 6 per cent from overseas. By 1996, 70 per cent of the full-time students were from Scotland, with 17 per cent from elsewhere in the UK and 13 per cent from overseas. These changes resulted in a significant rise demand for places in halls of residences, flats and other rented accommodation.
