Hillhead and Gilmorehill

An aerial view of Kelvingrove, Gilmorehill and Hillhead, 1966.

The University of Glasgow is right of centre in the photograph, with the south front of the Gilbert Scott Building overlooking the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the adjacent bowling greens. The expansion of the University into Hillhead is in progress, with the construction of the new University Library in the centre and the Queen Margaret Union to the left.

The construction of the new Glasgow Western Infirmary buildings (which opened in 1974) had not yet begun when this photograph was taken. The vast expanse of the Kelvin Hall's ferro-concrete roof dominates the view to the south of the Infirmary, on the opposite bank of the river.
