Tram to Cathcart

The tram home to Cathcart, c 1905.

This standard tram has open areas or "verandahs" at each end of the upper deck. The verandah design was introduced in 1904. Before then the top deck was completely open to the elements - an attractive feature in fine weather, but passengers would refuse to go upstairs when it was cold and wet and this led to overcrowding downstairs and to arguments between staff and passengers. It was also costly to the Tramways department as many passengers prefered to use another form of transport in bad weather.

The new verandah design added thirty-two covered seats upstairs, with five seats exposed to the elements at each end.
