The last ferry.
This image, taken from a collection of slides donated to the Museum of Transport by James Young, shows the Govan passenger ferry heading off into the sunset. The Clyde Navigation Trust had introduced a steam ferry on the Govan-Pointhouse crossing in the mid-1860s, and introduced diesel-powered ferries in the 1930s. The unusual silhouette of the ferry is due to roofing built on either side of the boat to offer some shelter to passengers.
The passenger ferry from Govan to Pointhouse was withdrawn in 1966, the year after the vehicular ferry service was discontinued.
