Horatio McCulloch's school

This photograph, taken in 1903, shows a building which once housed a school on the corner of Barrack Street and Armour Street in the Calton. The school's most famous "old boy" was the artist Horatio McCulloch (1805-1867).

McCulloch was a Glasgow-born landscape painter, famous for his romantic views of the Highlands. He began as an apprentice to a house painter but later studied easel painting under the guidance of John Knox. Knox was known for his vast city panoramas and McCulloch applied a similar large-scale and dramatic approach to his Highland landscapes.
