Professor John Stuart Blackie's birthplace in Charlotte Street, 1906.
The son of a banker, Blackie was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and studied at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen, before going abroad for further study. Blackie returned to Edinburgh and studied law before being called to the Bar in 1834. He never practiced as a lawyer however, for his translation of Goethe's Faust was published that year and was followed by several magazine articles on German language and culture. Blackie became a Professor of Humanities at the University of Aberdeen in 1841, and later taught Greek at Edinburgh University. He was a keen Scottish nationalist, raised most of the money to endow a chair of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh, and was an outspoke advocate of the reform of the education system.
