A portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots by an unknown artist. The portrait is often refered to as the Dalmahoy portrait or the Morton portrait as it was acquired from the Earl of Morton whose family had owned it since about 1585.
Mary (1542-1587) was Queen of Scotland 1542-1567. She is said to have courted her second husband, Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, at Crookston Castle in 1565. In May 1568 Mary's army was defeated by the forces of a confederation of powerful nobles led by Regent Moray at the Battle of Langside, and she was forced to flee to England.
