The Ship Launch

The Ship Launch, Barclay Curle Yard an oil painting by an unknown artist c 1830s.

The painting shows the launch of the sailing ship at Barclay, Curle & Co's shipyard at Stobcross on the north bank of the Clyde. Groups of people have assembled to watch the launch. The onlookers would have included workers from the yard, the owners of the ship and local dignitaries. There are two steamships under construction or repair on the neighbouring slipways.

John Barclay became a shipbuilder and repairer in 1818 and passed on the business to his son Robert. Robert was joined in partnership in 1845 by Robert Curle and James Hamilton, when the firm became Barclay, Curle & Co.
