Gorbals Burial Ground, 1907.
In 1715 the inhabitants of the Gorbals bought some land outside the village, on the south side of the Old Rutherglen Road, for use as a burial ground. The money was raised partly though a voluntary local tax which was calculated on the number of fireplaces in a building, and was therefore know as "reek money". In 1885 the road was widened, and the remains disturbed by this work were re-interred at cemeteries at Craigton and Cathcart.
The last interments at Gorbals Burial Ground took place around 1915. At the beginning of the 21st century it is an open grassy area with many old gravestones positioned around the perimeter wall.
