SCWS Staff, 1923

Staff from the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society's Boot and Shoe Department in Shieldhall, c 1923.

The stern-looking boss, Mr Soutar, is sitting in the centre of the front row. The supervisor Celia Watson, in a light-coloured coat, is sitting next to him. Other people in the front row are Dolly Pye from Scotstoun (third from right), Alec the mechanic (wearing a boiler suit) and Mr Wardley (whose son became a local councillor).

The SCWS was founded in 1868 to provide wholesale services for the Scottish co-operative movement. It began manufacturing a wide range of products for co-operative societies in the 1880s, primarily in its factories and workshops at Shieldhall.
