Bashir Maan

Bashir Maan on his election as Labour councillor for ward 27 (Kingston) in 1970.

Born in Pakistan in 1927, Maan came to Glasgow at the age of 26. He signed up for evening classes at the Royal Technical College (later the University of Strathclyde) and worked during the daytime to support himself. In 1964 he joined the Labour Party, and in 1970 stood for election in Kingston against a sitting Tory councillor. On winning election he became the United Kingdom's first Muslim councillor and he later became the country's first Muslim Justice of Peace.
