Shields Road

Shields Road on a snowy winter's day in the 1880s, photographed by Duncan Brown.

Pollokshields Parish Church (standing on the corner where Albert Drive meets Shields Road) is in the distance. The church was built 1877-1878 and was designed by Robert Baldie in a mixed Gothic style. To the right in front of the church is a row of terraced houses, originally called Knowe Terrace, built 1874-1876. The design of these houses was influenced by the design of the Knowe, a "Greek" Thomson villa opposite and featuring, for example, chimney pots modelled on the Knowe's gate piers.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
