Old Barony Kirk, 1889

The Barony Church photographed in 1889 by Duncan Brown. Glasgow Cathedral is in the background, left, and the statue of Norman Macleod (1812-1872) by John Mossman is in the foreground, right. In 1890 the congregation left the building for a new church building on the opposite side of Castle Street.

Macleod was minister of the Barony Church from 1851-1872 and was appointed chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1857. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1869. Macleod was regarded as one of the best public speakers of his day and the statue depicts him in the act of preaching.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
