Buildings and hoardings at Strathbungo, photographed by Duncan Brown in the 1880s or 1890s.
This photograph was probably taken in the west end of Strathbungo. The small two-storey cottages were the remnants of the old village which was once "inhabited principally by weavers, miners, and other descriptions of operatives". By the end of the 19th century these buildings were being demolished to make way for tenements like those in the background.
Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
