These two smartly dressed girls were the twin daughters of Douglas Baird. Charlotte (1852-1937) married the 4th Earl of Enniskillen, while Jane (1852-1943) married the son of the Bishop of Durham. Their father Douglas (1808-1854) was one of the Bairds of Gartsherrie, the rich and influential Lanarkshire family which controlled much of the coal and iron industry in the West of Scotland.
Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documented aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s. Much of his surviving work depicts streetscenes and buildings, but in the mid-19th century Brown was best known for his portraiture which he produced in his studio at the School of Art in Ingram Street. Portrait photography was introduced to Scotland in the 1840s and rose in popularity in the late 1850s when photographers’ costs and consequently their studio prices fell.
