Gartsherrie House

Gartsherrie House near Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire, photographed by Duncan Brown in 1855. Posing in front of the house are Mr and Mrs Thorneycroft, six of their children, Alexander Whitelaw and a nursemaid.

William Baird & Co acquired the Gartsherrie coal fields in 1826 and the mansion and estate in 1834. William Baird (b 1796) and then his brother James (1802-1876) lived there before it passed to their nephew Alexander Whitelaw (1823-1879), who was managing partner in the firm William Baird & Co and Conservative MP for Glasgow, 1874-1879.

Alexander's sister Jane Whitelaw (b 1824) married Captain Thomas Thorneycroft (b 1822) in 1847 and they went to live in Staffordshire. They had nine children.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
