Two Figures at a Fence

Two Figures at a Fence, 1904, by John Quinton Pringle (1864-1925).

Pringle painted this landscape at Port Ellen in Islay in 1903, adding the figures the following year. He used small brushstrokes in the oil painting which give an impression of restless movement.

Pringle lived in the East End for most of his life, and had a n optician's shop in the Saltmarket. He was also a talented and original painter and attended evening classes at the School of Art for many years. He refused to compromise his art and had little interest in making money from it, preferring to earn his income from his shop. He kept the two sides of his life separate, and many of the friends who knew him as an optician had no idea that he was also a painter.
