Port Vendres, La Ville

Port Vendres, La Ville c 1925-1926, watercolour on paper by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928).

Mackintosh and his wife Margaret went to the south west of France in 1923 and spent the next few years travelling in the area. The watercolours Mackintosh produced during his time in France were unlike his previous works, showing a preoccupation with static landscapes where individual elements were reduced to abstraction. This watercolour shows the village and waterfront of Port Vendres in Languedoc, with the foothills of the Pyrenees in the distance.
