The men are posing with examples of their work: tureens, jugs, bowls and a bust of the young Queen Victoria. Pressing is a mechanised process of making multiple, standardised ceramic pieces and. Unlike other processes such as jollying, it can be used to make asymmetrical products such as the bust of Queen Victoria.
Founded by J & M P Bell & Co in the 1840s, the Glasgow Pottery was in operation until 1911. The company produced pottery for home markets and became one of the main European exporters of ceramics to Asia and the Far East.
