Nurse and baby

Florence Russell with Nurse McGregor in Glasgow, before going to Singapore in 1915. Wealthy families often employed "live-in" nurses to care for their young children.

Scots played significant roles in developing the defences, trade and administration of the British colony in Singapore during the 19th century, and the connection remained strong in the 20th century. Prosperous Europeans lived in style and comfort in the colony, where ordinary life was not greatly affected by the First World War. Perhaps Nurse McGregor was glad to leave war-torn Europe for the Far East.
