A coat tree designed by George Henry Walton (1867-1933).
Walton designed this coat tree in 1897 for Miss Cranston's Buchanan Street Tea Rooms. Manufactured by his company George Walton & Co, it is made of ebonised wood with brass fittings, has three legs and three central spaces below for umbrellas. The legs continue up to the top of the coat tree, where they are gathered through a circular piece of wood. Walton borrowed elements from popular contemporary design of the period, using a black finish which was typical of the Aesthetic Movement and the high standard of craftsmanship which is often associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement.
