The May Queen

The May Queen, oil-painted gesso on hessian and scrim, by Margaret Macdonald (1864-1933).

Macdonald created these three panels in 1900, the year she married Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1869-1928). The panels were for the Ladies' Luncheon Room at Miss Cranston's Ingram Street Tea Room, which Mackintosh had been commissioned to decorate. The May Queen was mounted on the wall opposite The Wassail, a matching design by Mackintosh.
