Oh Ye, All Ye that Walk in Willow Wood

Oh Ye, All Ye that Walk in Willow Wood painted gesso with twine and coloured glass beads, 1903, by Margaret Macdonald (1864-1933).

Macdonald made this piece to hang opposite the fireplace in the Salon de Luxe at the Willow Tea Rooms, which her husband Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) had been commissioned to decorate. The tea rooms in Sauchiehall Street were owned by Kate Cranston (1849-1934) and took their name from that of the street, which in Scottish Gaelic means the "alley of the willows". Both Macdonald and Mackintosh used the willow theme as inspiration for their work on this commission.
