Remploy

A man with a prosthetic arm in the workshop at Remploy's Hillington factory, 1950s. The factory specialised in the manufacture of orthopaedic appliances. Another factory in Springburn manufactured bedding.

Remploy was established in 1945, originally as The Disabled Persons Employment Corporation. It was said that "no-one wanted a repeat of legless soldiers playing mouth organs on the streets" - a reference to the lack of support for victims of the First World War. The aftermath of the Second World War was to see "a scheme for the rehabilitation and training, and the securing of satisfactory employment, for disabled persons of all categories".

In the 21st century, Remploy continues as the UK’s leading supplier of employment opportunities for disabled people. It provides jobs and training in all parts of the economy, as well as in their own factories. With over eighty sites across the UK, they supply half of the top British companies with goods and services.
