The exterior of Creagdhu Children's Home in Newark Drive, Pollokshields, c 1996. The home was made up from two houses which had been purchased by Glasgow Corporation in the 1960s. Many large villas in this area, originally built as private houses, have subsequently been used for other purposes. In the immediate vicinity of Creagdhu at the time of the photograph were a nursery school, a synagogue, a day centre run by the Jewish Blind Society and a Sikh temple.
Children's homes run by the city's Social Work Services are subject to regular inspection. One such inspection in 2001 described the home at Newark Drive as "a local authority unit that provides care support and accommodation for six young people." It was noted that some work was required on the premises, particularly with regard to the woodwork round the front door and internal redecoration. But the report was generally positive on the staff and their relationship with the children.
