Singer Lulu after receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at Glasgow Caledonian University in November 2002. The ceremony took place on the same day it was announced that her single, We've got tonight, a duet with Ronan Keating, entered the charts at number 4 - evidence of her enduring appeal.
Defending the award of honorary degrees to celebrities, Principal and Vice-Chancellor Dr Ian Johnston said: "Lulu is a working class Glaswegian who has achieved distinction in her chosen profession a singer. She epitomises how hard work, and a can do approach can lead to the peak of professionalism. Despite her massive international success over four decades, Lulu has never forgotten her roots and we are extremely pleased that she has accepted this honour from a university, which is proud to give all Glaswegians an opportunity for a good start in life irrespective of class, wealth, race or religion."
