Robert Campbell

Robert Campbell (1829-1888) was a well-known steamboat captain on the River Clyde.

A native of Inchinnan, Bob Campbell was master of a tug while still in his teens. He progressed to being captain for many years of the river steamer Vivid on the route from Glasgow to Kilmun, where he established a reputation for high standards in safety and in courtesy towards passengers. He became a shipowner when he purchased the Benmore, a paddle-steamer which he ran on the same route. His popularity with the travelling public helped him survive business difficulties in later life.
