At a time when sweet-toothed Glaswegians were developing a taste for ice cream and aerated waters there was a growing demand for portable machines such as these, for small shops and for large prosperous households. Billiards, too, was growing in popularity and was played in gentlemen's clubs and in the homes of the wealthy.
